Subject: Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint
We had a great night at the BAFTAs, where Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint was nominated in the Mobile & Handheld category. We didn't expect to win, but as we got to the awards being announced, we had that tingling feeling that we just might...
We didn't, and Peggle HD got the award, which was a bit surprising as it's a five year old game - a great game which we love, but surely a game that should be up fora an award in 2012. We thought Quarrel should have been the one to win it really (in terms of rewarding freshness and innovation), or if not then the Mario game (which was objectively the best game on the list).
We had a quick cheeky moan on twitter, but mainly we were just glad to be there, and honoured to be nominated, so no complaints really.
There was quite a bit of fallout in the press though. The main complaints were that Skyrim didn't win anything (and it was the best game of 2011 in my humble opinion), and that the wrong game won the Mobile & Handheld award.
There were quite a few articles on the subject, but the best one was probably this opinion piece from Pocket Gamer, written by one of the judges on the Mobile & Handheld panel.
I hope BAFTA are able to improve things in future years, so the awards start going to talented and innovative developers, not just to well marketed games from big publishers.
