Retro Gamer #19-20

An interview with John Pickford and Ste Pickford, and our favourite games listed in the Desert Island Disks section, from December 2005.

This interview was done in the summer of 2005, and originally slated for the last issue of the original Retro Gamer (Live Publishing), then picked up for the relaunched version of the magazine in late 2005 (Imagine Publishing) and spread over two issues.

Paul Drury, who wrote the article, took us to the pub and promised us free beer for an interview. We were skint, so free beer sounded good. He transcribed the interview word for word from his tapes, but it was very, very sweary. I don't think we swear a lot in real life, but we obviously do without realising it when we've had a couple of pints. Paul kindly removed some of the swearing from his copy to stop us sounding like complete idiots.

I knew Retro Gamer magazine wasn't a big money spinner, so I was kind of surprised that they would stump up expense money for an afternoon in the pub, but when I asked Paul about this he admitted he wasn't on expenses, he was buying us pint after pint out of his own money! With the magazine's publisher about to fold, and a good chance he wasn't going to get paid for the article at all, I thought it about time we bought a round ourselves!

I wrote pages and pages describing my favourite games for the desert island disks bit, which would have gone on the cover mounted DVD which the original magazine came with, but it had to be edited for publication. The full text is here if anyone's interested.
