2000ad rejection letter

Ste Pickford

I found this last night digging through a box of old photos. It's a rejection letter from 2000ad's Art Director Robin Smith, around the early / mid 1980s I think. It's so sweet I just had to scan it in.

I'd drawn a really, really bad Judge Dredd strip (that I'd also written myself), aged about 12 or 13 (I can't remember), that I sent in, hoping to get it printed in the comic. They must have had a good laugh at it in Kings Reach Tower, and were probably inundated with dreadful submissions at the time, so it really meant a lot to me that Robin took the time to write me a lovely, encouraging letter like this.

Thank you!

(Sadly my figures are still rubbish, and my drawings are still very scratchy. Ho hum.)

One for /r/penmanshipporn there!

Hey Ste don't feel so down in the dumps about it. Drawing is a skill and it takes time to mature. In fact I believe I draw waaay more than you did. And I will admit some look very crappy compared to my other ones. I too have made lots of Comics but never published them. I do plan on drawing Anime Manga style art but it is not there yet. But as an Artist and a future game developer I truly admire your work. Just wish you guys would finish most of your games and that they would fetch a little more attention. Look forward to seeing more of your artwork. Sincerely Mr.Polygon
