Subject: Sketches
This is just a random page of sketches I did on the train from Buxton to Manchester a few years ago, on my way to a meeting with the Team 17 lads in Dukes, Castlefield.
I must have been feeling brave on this day, to draw so many people at such close quarters. I love sketching people, but hate it if people notice me when I'm sketching (or want to look at my drawing - argh!), or if they move before I've finished (double argh!!). For those reasons I hardly ever draw strangers, unless it's from a distance, or they're asleep, haha. Oh, or if I'm drunk - then I'm not bothered if people notice, and I sketch fast enough when I'm drunk not to mind if they move either!
I love looking through other people's sketches on Flickr (click the sketch to go to my flickr page), and really admire those artists who can sit in a cafe or a pub all day and do beautiful little drawings of all the people who pass by, capturing their characters and personalities in few quick pen strokes. I'm far too laboured and deliberate to manage that, and am usually still caught up in the shading of a fold of cloth in someone's collar to capture their expression before they've walked away.
I should probably keep trying to sketch people a bit faster, but unless I'm feeling brave or drunk I usually stick to drawing inanimate objects.
