Subject: Vampire Circus
This is a drawing from the Vampire Circus game design document, from around 1996. I've already posted some of the rough concept art from my sketchbook for this project. This is one of the more finished drawings for the document we presented to potential clients.
The other reason for this drawing was that I'd never really done any 3D modelling at the time, but it was clear that I was going to have to build 3D models of the characters. To give myself the best shot at it, I spent a lot of time planning the characters and doing detailed drawings like these working out the relative sizes of all the limbs etc. I didn't want to make the typically squashed, badly proportioned model most 2D artist made on their first attempt at 3D!
In the end I only built a 3D model of one of the five characters in the game, but I drew detailed plans like this for all of them. For the one I built, the plans were actually really useful, and model came out OK for a first attempt. I've not done a great deal of character modelling since - it's a bit of a specialised job now - only the Naked War characters I think, and I probably didn't plan those out in quite the same detail.
