Subject: IronSword
This is the a page from the Ironsword (Wizards and Warriors II) game design document, our first NES game from 1988.
I was clearly 'influenced' by (copying) the map from Capcom's Ghosts 'n' Goblins game (a conversion of which was one of the first things I worked on, a few years earlier).
You had two play through four main areas, each controlled by an 'elemental', before making your way to Ice Fire mountain (I think that name was dictated to us by Rare, although we made the rest up ourselves) to fight the big boss. Each of the four elemental areas actually consisted of two areas I think (the wind area had a windy mountain range, and a cloud section, for example), so there were nine big locations in the game in total, as well as several little cave areas.
The in-game version of this map actually corresponds very closely to the sketch. I'll probably post a picture of that in a few days.
