Concept and promo artwork from the game's development
The paper / blueprint theme we went for with Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint led us to using a lot of hand drawn graphics in the game. Ste spent almost as much time with a pencil in his hand, working in his sketchbook, as he did in Photoshop.
Below are some of the rough sketches, and the finished pencil graphics themesleves (after being scanned), that went into the game, as well as some rough design sketches.
The way we create games, designing and iterating as we develop, tends to lead to a lot of reworking or (surprisingly rarely) abandoning of finished graphics. We say rarely as one would expect the method we use to lead to lots of abandonded work, but we tend to have pretty good instincts, and our experience allows us to avoid going up too many blind alleys or dead ends.
Most of the visual re-working tends to be tweaking or modifying graphics once they're in the game and we've lived with them for a while, or sometimes in response to how testers react.
Below are some posts from the blog during development, showing some of the graphics in their earliest incarnations.
